Road Safety

Lesson Plan Ideas

For Use with Hedgehog Logos & Roadways

One Whole Lesson – Road Safety- (1hr)

Starter – 10/20 minutes – Playground Circle

Use the Playground Circle for starter activities. Chose one or two warm up games and one or two concentration games. These can be tailored to the content of the lesson e.g.
1). Word Association game – “Road Safety” / “Accident” / “Crash” etc.
2). Swap Spots if: “You think roads are dangerous” / “You think you need to be very careful around roads” / “You know someone who has had an accident on the road”

Main – Body of the Lesson – 20/40 minutes – Roadway

1). Resulting concepts/stories can be explored in further detail / re-enacted, use a forum to suggest ways in which the accident could have been avoided.
2). Use the track to role play scenarios (use different cards for individual, pairs or groups of students) e.g. “Go to the shop from the school to buy some lunch” / “Visit the garage to buy some fuel, and drop off the children at school”. Extension: Numeracy – use money at the shops and to pay or fuel. Literacy – Read and write down directions for various buildings. Write a diary entry for the experience. Dramatise a scene in which something goes wrong on the road; perform from the circle and evaluate the work verbally/written/video with the student audience. What worked well, what could be improved upon next time (comments on group work, language used, dramatisation, effects on the audience).

3). Use the various encounters with markings such as the zebra crossing to reinforce the message “STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE”. Students can enact and recite message.

4). Use the playground markings to practice crossing the road. Verbalise “STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE”. Use the school grounds zebra crossing to reinforce and assess students understanding. Extension: Look for a zebra crossing in the local community and give student an assessment grade for correctly using it. 1-5 = unsatisfactory/ satisfactory/ good/ very good/ excellent. A =Stop, B =Look, C =Listen, D =Live. All students aim for an A – D 5. Give certificates for these.

Plenary – 10/20 minutes – Playground Circle

1). Dead Cat – “I think roads can be dangerous” / “I know how to cross the road and be safe” / “I am afraid of the road” / “I know how to use a zebra crossing”
2). Ask key students to elaborate on their answers to the group and discuss.
3). The teacher ends the class by reinforcing the notion that we can be safe on the road if we are careful. Use slogan “STOP, LOOK, LISTEN, LIVE”.
